Biography / Biografia

Jonathan Coe was born in Birmingham in 1961, and now lives in London. His first international success was What a Carve Up! (1994) translated in sixteen languages. It was followed by novels including The House of Sleep (1997), The Rotters’ Club (2001), The Rain Before It Falls (2007) and Mr Wilder and Me (2020). His awards include the Prix Médicis Étranger in 1998, the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize in 2001, the Samuel Johnson Prize in 2005 and the Prix du Livre Européen in 2019. In 2016 he was made Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Middle England (2018) is the most recent chapter in the saga of The Rotters’ Club, with a story set in England during the years before and after the Brexit referendum. Bournville (2022) is his latest novel.

Con Middle England (Middle England, 2018), un’indagine sull’Inghilterra degli anni prima e dopo la Brexit, ha completato la saga iniziata con La banda dei brocchi. Brexit and the politics of nostalgia, interactive workshop

In this session Jonathan Coe will examine the extent to which nostalgia was a motivation in the UK’s decision to leave the European Union in 2016. Further questions to discuss will include: does nostalgia still drive UK politics, seven years later? Is it a phenomenon peculiar to the older generation? Is it something that affects only the political right, or is there also a left-wing nostalgia? Coe will be inviting students to consider a number of texts on this subject – by journalists, historians and novelists (including himself).

In questo incontro Jonathan Coe prenderà in esame il ruolo della nostalgia nell’uscita del Regno unito dall’Unione Europea nel 2016, chiedendosi se essa sia stata un fattore determinante. Gli altri temi discussi includono il ruolo della nostalgia nella politica UK a sette anni di distanza, se essa sia un fenomeno circoscritto alle generazioni più anziane, e se si tratti di un fattore determinante per la sola destra o se esista una “nostalgia di sinistra”. Coe inviterà gli studenti a prendere in considerazione vari testi in materia – composti da giornalisti, storici e romanzieri (incluso lui stesso).

“Telling stories is telling lies”: B.S. Johnson and the phenomenon of autofiction, interactive workshop

In recent years autofiction has become a recognised, widely-read and much-discussed literary genre, in which the writer does not invent fictional narratives but rather describes her own personal experience, often in the form of ‘creative memoir’. An early and significant exponent of the genre was the British writer B S Johnson, who was active in the 1960s. Jonathan Coe will discuss his life, his career, and the implications of his theories for writers and readers. Students will read and discuss a selection of his texts.

Negli ultimi anni l’autofiction è assurta rango di genere letterario riconosciuto, letto e ampiamente studiato. Essa prevede che l’autore non crei narrazioni immaginarie, ma che descriva la propria esperienza personale, spesso sotto forma di ‘autobiografia creativa’. L’autore britannico B.S. Johnson, attivo negli anni Sessanta, rappresenta un importante antesignano di questo genere letterario. Durante questo incontro Jonathan Coe ne discuterà la biografia, la carriera, e le implicazioni delle sue teorie per scrittori e lettori. Il seminario prevede la lettura e la discussione dei testi con gli studenti.
